Welcome to Kalgoorlie Baptist Church!

Welcome to our regular attenders and to those who are looking to find out more!

This week we take a look at the first three of six myths about spirituality that the Apostle John exposes in the Fourth Chapter of his First Letter:

Spiritual Myth Number 1: Every Spiritual Path leads to God.

1 John 4

1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Spiritual Myth Number 2: Good and Evil are two opposing forces, equal in power.

This idea of yin-yang has very widespread popularity, but it is not supported by the Scriptures. 1 John 4:4 is a resounding refutation of the concept!

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Spiritual Myth Number 3: Spiritual success depends on our performance.

Success in following Jesus is not performance-based…it is repentance-driven. Is anyone else reading this as glad about that as I am? Please allow me to explain what I mean here: No scheme for salvation that depends on our performance has any hope of succeeding. Salvation through trusting in Jesus Christ succeeds because it allows for mistakes, for failure, for the struggle with sin to continue without disqualifying the Christian believer…because whenever we fail…Jesus calls us back to repentance – and that is where He forgives and restores us…and calls us to walk on again, trusting in Him.
